Gears in general

Ever notice how when one gear turns one way, the other gear turns the other way?

Unless it's like a miter gear, bevel gear, worm gear, hypoid offset ring/pinion gear. Then you get into those wierd angles and stuff.

It started with never being able to afford to pay a mechanic to fix my car, and just kinda grew from there. :p

Then there's planetary gears. One set can give you a reduction, direct drive, overdrive, and reverse. You'd just hafta design a proper clutching system.

And don't get me started on internal ring gears, now!

Since I mentioned hypoid offset ring/pinion gears and bevel gears, it just seems fitting to note that i recently had fun removing/repairing/reinstalling such a couple of sets in the rear axle of our Rodeo. Good times, man.

This kind of stuff really grinds my gears... not to be confused with dear, beer, here, and mirror but that is somthing else.

Believe it or not, I put the chunk back in, and the gears don't grind! I'm so glad I didn't hafta shim the unit again... would've had to pop the carrier bearings off, gotten a tube of marking compound, would have taken all day in the cold rain. Such a relief!
