Hi Im a little new to the boards but i have read a lot of what you all have posted I have been praying about getting a tattoo. I dont mean just for the fun of it and not to be rebllious. I will only get it if God lays it on my heart. It will be one to Honor Him and also celebrate my commitment to my future husband. I just want to Know what you all think. Just make sure it is God saying yes and not yourself.

I've been wanting to get a tattoo for a long time now (like 5 years or something). It used to be just for fashion reasons. But, now it's so much more than that. I want to get (I don't know what you call it) that symbol that's on a lot of P.O.D.'s stuff (that represents the trinity). I don't know wheter or not to get one though. I just have a lot of different thoughts about that. I'm praying about it, and I'll just have to wait and see, because right now, I can honestly see both sides of the 'argument'. Well, anyway, just do what you think God wants you to do, and don't worry about what anyone else thinks, because they don't matter in the end anyway. To quote Disciple, "I don't give a rat's rear end, as long as my God's happy...."

Well, I got a tattoo of the Trinity a couple of weeks ago and that didn't change my heart...a lot of ppl think that if a person gets a tat then it automatically changes their heart...NOT! I love God more every day...even since I got my tattoo...read 1 Sam. 16:7...

This might make you reconsider getting a tatt of the trinity

Glyasdi, are you saying you believe Jesus is God based on what someone else says or doesn't say? Maybe I'm not understanding your link. Sorry.

i can't remember the verse(s) that say not to do harmful things to our body, but i'm pretty sure it's there. in this light, getting a tatt doesn't really harm your body. it's permanent, but getting one doesn't have any negative long term side effects. however, if you want to get one, make sure that it doesn't flaunt your physical body. modesty is important.

wouldn't it be neat if someone who wasn't a Christian saw it, asked you what it meant, and then you got to tell them about Jesus??

i don't know if i helped much, but it's something to think about. just don't base your decision on something that a person has said. after all, we're only people. God is God.

sorry that i don't have any real Bible references...

I had a tattoo before I came to God, and afterwords I had to change it to fit my new state of mind. I am happy with it and most of the time don't even notice it's there. And it does give me a way to explain my beliefs to people who, otherwise, wouldn't listen. Just use it as a tool. Oh, and my tattoo before was a butterfly(I know, how unoriginal. But I was 17!), and afterwords I added 1Samuel 16:7 to make my outer appearance a symbol of my faith instead of a symbol of pop culture-rebel at my father-live life on the edge trends.

I just got a tattoo this Saturday (3 days ago). It's of the trinity symbol (the thing that's on a lot of P.O.D.'s stuff). I'm very happy with it and I wanna use it to witness to other people.

The going theory is NOT that it changes your heart, but that since heathen people around the time of Moses started it, that it was inspired by the Devil and is therefore an "entry point" for him to use in tempting you or whatnot. People who argue against tats are likely correct in that every ancient civilization that started tats was heathen. This is not a great sign for me, and I don't know that I would get one. At least now you know anyway what people think...

well, I personally don't feel there is anything wrong with tatoos as long as they are not of anything negative. However they can potentially harm your body in several ways. one being you can have an allergic reaction to the ink (the ink used is not FDA approved and you never know what things you can be allergic to). If this happens then you will have to have a large portion of your skin removed and a large scar will remain. Another risk is disease. If for some reason something happens you can get various diseases. Tats CAN harm your body potentially. Now in most cases they won't, but there is always that risk. It's something to think about if you're thinking of getting one. I still think they're ok, but they are a big decision. Anyways, that's my two cents.

peace in Christ,
Josh

PS- I honestly still wanna get one, but I think I'm gonna have to wait till I move out cause my parents would murder me! LOL

I'm just joking man....don't take me serious. I know..this is the WORD thread and I should be serious. *sl100pd slaps caleejr in the head with a large trout*

I believe it's a 'preference' issue. Because under the new covenant...I'll have to find the scripture to show it, but to paraphrase...since we are not 'bound' by the Law it is permissible, and is a preference...but not all preference issues are beneficial...that is where discernment and prayer come into play.

I think it's permissible.

now for the rest of those that will read this I say this:

I know that some may come up with something from Leviticus. But we have not consecrated ourselves as Levite priests...if so, then we sin by wearing cotton/poly blends. Not a 'law buffet'...pick and choose what we want on our plate. We aren't Levitical priests, so I do not believe we are under Levitical law. Plus being a Christian, we were set free of the Law of Moses according to Paul...for those that say that 'well if that's true, I can go sin'...no...you still need to take guiadance from it...but you are not BOUND by it. ohhh go study would ya...my brain hurts. LOL

Piercings:
I can give several instances from the Bible to support that piercings (mainly ear rings) are ok. Lets start with 1 Cor. 6:12 12"Everything is permissible for me"--but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible for me"--but I will not be mastered by anything. That covers most things but as Carl said, discernment and prayer will help you know the difference.

Now for Biblical reference of piercing:
Exodus 32:2
Aaron answered them, "Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me."

Notice that he says "sons"? That must mean that men wore earrings as well as women.
And again in Judges 8:24
And he said, "I do have one request, that each of you give me an earring from your share of the plunder." (It was the custom of the Ishmaelites to wear gold earrings.)

Now for the most telling eveidence... First some background. This chapter in Ezekiel is an allegory of Christ and His bride. In verse 11, He starts talking about how He will adorn his bride. Ezekiel 16
11 I adorned you with jewelry: I put bracelets on your arms and a necklace around your neck, 12 and I put a ring on your nose, earrings on your ears and a beautiful crown on your head. 13 So you were adorned with gold and silver; your clothes were of fine linen and costly fabric and embroidered cloth. Your food was fine flour, honey and olive oil. You became very beautiful and rose to be a queen

Here we see that the bride of Christ has earrings and a nose ring. If these things are proper and ok for the bride of Christ, they must then be ok for us as well.

Here is another way to look at earrings.
Exodus 21
5 "But if the servant declares, 'I love my master and my wife and children and do not want to go free,' 6 then his master must take him before the judges. [1] He shall take him to the door or the doorpost and pierce his ear with an awl. Then he will be his servant for life.

Deuteronomy 15
16 But if your servant says to you, "I do not want to leave you," because he loves you and your family and is well off with you, 17 then take an awl and push it through his ear lobe into the door, and he will become your servant for life. Do the same for your maidservant.

We as Christians are willing servants of our master Jesus Christ. We have been set free and can choose to go if we want. However, we have choosen to stay and serve our master. The earring is symbol that we are His servant for life.

So, that is my opinion of ear rings. Now if you had other piercings in mind, I think that most are just a personal preference and are covered under thet first verse I listed and as such, the Holy Spirit will let you know those that are wrong or improper. (In my opinion, there are some piercings that are wrong). Hope this ansers your question.
